[Oats] are mainly eaten as porridge, as an ingredient in breakfast cereals and in baked goods (oatcakes, oat cookies and oat bread). Over the past few decades oats have become a very popular "health food".
Oats are a cereal food. Oats contain protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and healthy fibre. Oats are also eaten as whole grains which is healthier and more natural than refined cereal products like white flour or white rice.
Oats have a lot going for them. Not only is it a great way to start the day, but research suggests they can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels without lowering your good HDL cholesterol. The same goes for oat bran, which is in some cereals, bread, cakes, pastries and other products.
